Most AI-assisted screeners combine two layers:

Survivorship Bias in the Underlying Universe

A screener only searches the stocks currently in its database. Companies that were delisted, went bankrupt, or were acquired don't show up, which can make historical screening criteria look more successful than they actually were, since the failures have been silently removed from the sample.

Correlated Criteria That Look Like Independent Confirmation

A screen for "low P/E, high dividend yield, low debt" sounds like three independent signals of quality. In practice, these three often move together mechanically (a falling stock price simultaneously lowers P/E and raises dividend yield), so the screen may just be finding stocks that have recently fallen, not stocks with three genuinely independent positive attributes.

Overfitting the Screen to Recent Winners

It's easy to build a screen backward from stocks that already performed well ("what did the last quarter's winners have in common") and mistake the resulting criteria for a forward-looking edge. A screen built this way is describing the past, not predicting the future, and often fails the moment market conditions shift.

Qualitative Summaries That Oversell the Match

An AI-generated blurb explaining why a stock matched your criteria is written to be readable and confident. It can make a marginal match sound like a strong one, especially if the language layer is optimized for engagement rather than calibrated uncertainty. A stock described as having "strong momentum and improving fundamentals" might barely clear the numeric thresholds you set.

Too Many Results, Not Enough Differentiation

A screen that returns 200 stocks provides an illusion of thoroughness without actually narrowing anything meaningfully. The value of a screener is in cutting the universe down to a workable shortlist, not in restating a large chunk of the market back to you with a summary attached.

How to Use a Screener Without Getting Fooled

1. Know Which Layer Produced Each Result

For any stock in your results, check whether it matched on hard numeric criteria or on the AI's interpretation of a fuzzier criterion. Weight numeric matches more heavily when precision matters.

2. Re-Verify the Numbers Yourself

3. Treat a Screen as a Shortlist, Not a Conclusion

A screener's job is to cut a universe of thousands down to a manageable list worth researching further. It's the first step of research, not a substitute for it. Every result still needs the same technical, fundamental, and risk review you'd give any candidate.

4. Check for Correlated Criteria

Before trusting a multi-factor screen, ask whether the factors are actually independent or whether they're different symptoms of the same underlying condition (like a recent price decline).

5. Backtest the Screening Criteria Out-of-Sample, If You Can

If a screen is built to be reused regularly (not a one-off idea search), test whether stocks that historically matched the criteria actually outperformed afterward, on a period the criteria weren't built from. This is the same discipline that applies to backtesting any AI-generated trading strategy.
